We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that your holiday is spent enjoying the company of your loved ones. This holiday, while gathered around the turkey, we encourage you to put aside some time to ask your family members important questions regarding long-term care and their estate plan.
Here are a few questions you may consider asking your loved ones:
- Who will help you manage during a health crisis?
- Who will take care of legal or financial decisions if you are incapacitated?
- Do you have an estate plan, and is it up-to-date?
- Who are the people involved in your plan?
- Where do you keep your estate planning binder and other important papers?
Not only is it important for you to discuss family members’ estate plans, but be sure to inform your loved ones of your estate plan as well. If your family members are uncomfortable or unwilling to have this conversation with you, remind them it is important to talk about it in case either of you ever have an emergency. By opening the conversation and getting feedback, you will feel more prepared and may even consider making changes to your plan after the holidays.
