We are in the first few weeks of the back-to-school season! Many students are starting to settle back into their school-year routines and are becoming accustomed to new rhythms and ways of doing things. For some, however, it may feel a bit harder to figure things out or to do things the way it seems they are expected to do them. As a parent, you may be starting to notice that your child is struggling in some way. If so, we want to make parents aware of accommodations and modifications that schools offer that may help their children with completing their schoolwork or make them more comfortable in an educational setting.
There are two separate plans, a section 504 and an IEP that are free and can be requested from your child’s school. A 504 plan helps ensure equitable access to a learning environment. An IEP is geared towards educational benefits and can include services such as speech or occupational therapy. These plans can help with the classroom and learning environment, curriculum, test taking and grading, writing, handwriting, behavioral accommodations, health accommodations, low-incidence accommodations, and more.

If your child has accommodations or modifications in their plan, it’s a good idea to let your estate planning attorney know. By letting them know, your estate planning attorney can help to ensure your children’s guardian has specific care instructions in the event they need to care for your child. Give us a call to let us know about any education-related accommodations or modifications your child may have or to schedule a complimentary consultation.
