Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms out there! For some, this may be your first Mother’s Day. Whether you have been a mom for a day or twenty years, we can generally all agree that we want to protect and love our children. In this blog, we will highlight the important estate planning actions you should take and the changes to make as a new or expecting mom to make sure your children are taken care of in the ways that matter to you.

It is important to provide for our children and their basic needs. Through estate planning, you can ensure that their needs are met if you are unable to be there. This includes putting a guardian in place for your children and setting aside money through a trust for any expenses they may face.

You also should consider your health and who you would want to express your wishes about your medical care on your behalf if you are unable to do so at any point. Establishing a healthcare proxy will allow someone else to do this on your behalf. It is important to inform both your healthcare proxy and your children’s guardian of their special roles and any important things you would like them to do both through in-person conversations and in instructions in your estate plan to remind them in the event they need to fulfill these roles.

There are plenty of other unique specializations we can make to your plan based on your family’s needs. If you are expecting or have children you would like to ensure are taken care of, please give us a call so we can create or update an estate plan for you.
